Terms like immersive technology, AR, VR and MR can feel like buzzwords – widely used, but not always clearly understood.
That’s where we come in.
At Far From Square, we’re a creative technology studio specialising in immersive experiences. We combine concept, design and technical development to deliver impactful projects across a range of technical solutions.
What matters most is not chasing the newest technology, but knowing which approach is right for the idea and understanding the practical considerations, limitations and opportunities that come with each one. And there are loads!
Importantly, you don’t need to arrive with all the answers. We define them with you, every step of the way.
To help unpack this a bit further and explain our role in the creative and technical process, here are a few questions we’re often asked.
Q. What is a creative technology studio?
It sits between a creative agency and a technical production team. We design and build experiences that translate ideas into interactive formats that audiences can engage with directly – combining creative thinking, technical expertise and practical implementation knowledge.
Q. What do you mean by ‘immersive technology’?
Immersive technology is a broad term that describes experiences which blend physical and digital worlds. This can include things like AR filters on social media, VR environments, or interactive installations such as touch screens at events, museums or theme parks – anything where the audience actively participates rather than just observes.
Q. Do you help with ideas, or just build what’s already been designed?
Both. We can develop ideas from scratch, or take existing concepts and shape how they should work creatively and technically. Most projects sit somewhere between the two. In either case, we help explore feasibility, technical approach and delivery options early in the process, so decisions are grounded in what will actually work.
Q. What kind of projects do you work on?
We work across brands, cultural institutions, events, exhibitions and experiential campaigns. This can range from educational VR experiences used in schools, through to AR-led brand activations, interactive installations for visitor attractions, and gamified experiences. The goal is always the same: to create more engaging, memorable experiences through the use of technology.
Q. Do we need to know what technology we want to use?
Not at all. Clients often come to us with a goal rather than a technical brief. We help identify the right approach based on audience, budget, objectives, logistics and environment. A key part of our role is drawing on our knowledge of the space to carry out the technical research and exploration upfront – understanding what is possible, what is practical and what will deliver the best outcome.
Q. Who do you work with?
We work directly with brands and clients, as well as alongside agencies and production partners. In many cases, we act as an extension of an existing team, supporting the technical side of a project and working alongside internal or external partners where needed.
Q. Can you support a project from start to finish?
Of course! That’s typically how we like to work. We’re often involved from early concept through to final delivery, ensuring continuity between the idea and the finished experience. This also allows us to manage the technical journey end-to-end, reducing risk and ensuring the experience performs as intended.
Q. How involved will I be in the development process?
Collaboration is a key part of how we work. We share work in progress at key stages and build in clear review and sign off points throughout. We manage the project end-to-end, keeping everything on track with regular updates, while always listening to and advising on your feedback. The aim is a transparent, collaborative process with no surprises – just a well-delivered outcome.
Q. Do you handle installation and on-site delivery?
Yes, where required. We have experience managing installation and deployment across a wide range of projects, from museum showcases and exhibitions to live events and international activations. On-site support can also be provided if needed.
Q. Do you offer training for internal teams?
Yes. If clients prefer to run the experience themselves, we can provide training and handover documentation so internal teams can operate and maintain it confidently.
Q. Do you offer ongoing support after a project goes live?
Yes, where needed. For projects that remain out in the wild – such as installations, apps or long-term activations – we can provide ongoing support and maintenance packages. This can include technical monitoring, content updates and service level agreements (SLAs) tailored to the scale and requirements of the project.
Q. How flexible is your involvement?
Very. We can lead projects end-to-end, support specific stages or provide targeted expertise – whether that’s creative development, technical build or deployment.
Q. What makes your approach different?
We don’t force projects into a fixed model. Instead, we adapt around the client’s needs – combining creative thinking with technical understanding to build experiences that are right for the audience, brief and context.
A key part of our value is knowing how immersive technologies behave in real-world conditions and using that experience to guide better decisions early, before time and budget are committed in the wrong direction.
Q. Where should we start?
With a friendly conversation. You don’t need a fully formed brief. We can help shape the idea, define the technology and map out how to bring it to life.
Ready to explore an idea?
If you’ve got a brief in mind – or even just a challenge that could benefit from a more interactive or immersive approach – we’re happy to talk it through.
You don’t need a finished concept. We can help shape the idea, define what’s possible and find the right direction together.
